Beijing Noodles (北京快餐) – Quay Street Ultimo (just up from UTS Library)

Beijing Noodles is a little gem of a restaurant that comes highly recommended from the most important critics of all – Chinese people themselves. Nestled between two other restaurants on Quay Street, Ultimo, Beijing Noodles is a charming find. Although seating arrangements are a little cramped at times (with a maximum of 3 people to each table, four at an absolute push), the food and the authentic Beijing staff more than make up for it.

Beijing Noodles specialises in sumptuous local Beijing dishes, slightly adapted for Western tastes no doubt. The menus are thankfully presented in Chinese and in English so as not to alienate non-Chinese patrons.

My personal favourite dishes (which I recommend with noted bias) include: Pork Strips on a fried base (肉丝炒饼) or its vegetable counterpart (素炒饼), Pork Dumplings (肉包), Spicy Sauce Noodles (炸酱面), Spring Onion Pancakes (葱花饼) and Specially Wrapped Pork (回锅肉夹饼).

The Pork Strips are absolutely divine, although a recent change of ingredients has made them a little less delectable than before. If you are brazen enough I suggest you ask the Chef to replace the bean curds with Chinese cabbage. The Pork Dumplings and the Spring Onion Pancakes are fantastic and you can order any number of each you wish, although be warned they are quite large and filling.

Despite the restaurant’s squashy interior, the friendly banter of the kitchen staff and closeness of the seating arrangements make for quite a cozy and enjoyable atmosphere. Anyone learning Mandarin should definitely go to Beijing Noodles and practise, if you can stomach the harsh Beijing Mandarin accent that is. ;-) Several staff members are quite excited (one lady in particular is overly so) when a foreigner comes in speaking Chinese and will happily give you the third degree on your studies.

Another bonus for students is that the food at Beijing Noodles is reasonably priced at around $7 for large dishes. You certainly get your money’s worth.

All in all, Beijing Noodles is one of my favourite Chinese restaurants in Sydney, one that I return to time and time again (and there aren’t many of those considering the poor food and even poorer customer service at some restaurants in Chinatown). But you don’t have to believe me, go and see it for yourself! 
