What is In-Country Study?
In-country Study is a key component of both the Bachelor of Arts in International Studies and the coursework Master of Arts in International Studies. It provides a unique opportunity for students to immerse themselves in the language and culture of another country through a learning program at a host university. Involve yourself in the local community, travel and study in one practical learning experience!

When?
Students taking the combined degree with a BA in International Studies must spend two semesters of study at a university or other higher education institution in the country that is their major. In-country Study is usually taken in the fourth year of a combined degree.

Students taking the MA in International Studies may spend one semester of study in the country of their major.

That's right- you HAVE to go overseas!

Where?
All In-country Study is taken in countries or regions where English is not the predominant language.

You can choose from over 40 universities in Canada (Quebec), Chile, China, France, Germany, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Malaysia, Mexico, Spain, Switzerland, Thailand and Latino USA. Or, if you have 'heritage' in another country or prior extensive knowledge of another language, you may be possible for you to study elsewhere!

What?
Each student's individual study program will depend on their level of language competence and the subjects and other learning experiences that are available at their host university. All students must also complete project work and reports which are assessed by staff of the Institute.

Costs
During their In-country Study students continue to be enrolled at UTS and to pay HECS for their study.

Tuition fees at overseas universities and a one year, round trip air ticket are paid by UTS. Visa fees are also paid by UTS and just in case of accidents or sickness, students are covered by the UTS Overseas Insurance Policy. Other costs such as accomodation and living expenses during the period overseas are paid by the student.

You might be able to get a Commonwealth Government funded loan called OS-HELP. It's a loan program specifically designed to help students who are studying overseas as part of their undergraduate study.
