Introducing UTS
The University of Technology, Sydney. UTS. The tower building. Lots of nerds. Lots of buildings.
Many people who think of UTS immediately visualise a big, tall, bland brown colour tower. Let's swipe that cliche "don't judge a book by its cover" and discover UTS for what it is. We're not in denial that the outside aesthetic of Building One of UTS is unattractive. Rather, we invite you to discover the real UTS: a vibrant body of students, staff, researchers, academics, inventors and party animals who together challenge ideas, invent, and create new paradigms through debate and research. Together we tramp across the urban jungle we call our uni campus. Below are a few semiotic constructions ( aka perceptions- ok ok, no more taking the mickey out of academics!) of the university:
Perception: UTS is just the tower building
Reality: UTS has a few campuses including Broadway (the main campus), Haymarket (near Chinatown) and Ku-ring Gai (nestled in the leafy North Shore). We even have a few buildings that have won awards for its architecture.
Perception: UTS has no campus life
Reality: Lots of students, lots of clubs, heaps of events organised by the Union and the uni...
Perception: It has no grass
Reality: We're working on that! We do have a little patch of grass called the Alumni Green which has recently been re-grassed, though it couldn't be dubbed a national heritage area. Let's face it, we are in the heart of the city...
No, UTS is not just a big, tall, ugly, brown building- it's got character!

The UTS Peer Network is a voluntary program and performs a valuable role in assisting new students make the adjustment to university life. During Orientation Peer Networkers meet new students, answer their questions, escort them around the campuses, facilitate group sessions and generally provide a warm welcome to UTS.
