Non-Profit organisations
- Fundraising Institute of Australia is the peak body for all non-profits. They have excellent library on such issues as corporate social responsibility, sponsorship development, etc. Check out their website at www.fia.org.au for information about events. Call FIA for referrals to non-profits that have potential mentors in your special interest area: 9411 6644
- UTS Shopfront matches community groups with students on specific projects. Ring 9514 2911 or review projects listed on www.shopfront.uts.edu.au .
Special interest organisations/forums/businesses
Interested in developing contacts or extending your networks with a certain country, or industry area? Look online or in the phone book for contact information for Chambers of Commerce, cultural groups, or associations.
Consider contacting embassies in Canberra or consulates in Sydney for companies from specific countries that are doing with Australia . They may even be able to refer you to a businessperson willing to mentor you in your chosen field, or may be able to give you an “information interview”.

Professional industry organisations that relate to many Humanities studies areas
- The NSW Not-for-profit Communicators Group meets regularly for professional development and networking. Its members are very likely to be interested in students! Subscribe to its listserv by emailing Janet.Granger-Wilcox@ridbc.org.au
- The Last Thursday Club is open to anyone interested in advertising/graphic/design/copywriting/web design/film/TV marketing, etc Meets the last Thursday of each month at 6pm for networking, with speakers at 7pm @ Fox and Lion Hotel, 1 Bent St, Fox Studios, Moore Park. - Public Relations Institute of Australia has events for entry level practitioners. Good place to make valuable contacts. Ring 9247 6944 for details about upcoming events or look at www.pria.com.au . Please note, the role of PRIA is to assist members and promote membership- do not ask PRIA for internships or to find an organisation to work with. - International Association of Business Communicators has a very strong Sydney Chapter with lots of events (and student rates). Check out www.iabcnsw.com . In the past few years, UTS has established its very own chapter- to find out more about it go to www.utsunion.uts.edu.au and look in the clubs section.
- Marcoms Network is run by UTS Public Communication tutor Mark Woodrow. He sends regular electronic newsletters filled with job leads and industry news, and organises occasional networking events. For information: www.marcoms.com.au
- Arts contacts through SAMAG
Make great contacts in the arts through the Sydney Arts Management Advisory Group (SAMAG), which offers monthly programs as well as a very useful newsletter. Contact Jaclyn Booton, coordinator, on (02) 8250 5722 or email info@samag.org . Events cost only $5 for members/$10 non-members.
