INSTITUTE OF INTERNATIONAL STUDIES

Subject name: Contemporary German
What did you learn in this subject? All things German: history, politics, culture, religion etc

What is the teaching style? You have a Learning Journal which you reflect on the weekly readings (only have to write 250 words), in addition to a presentation and a final essay

What did you like/dislike most about this subject? The relaxed nature of the class and it was very discussion based. Both the lecturer and tutor are excellent

Would you recommend it to other students? Why? Definitely. I found it very interesting, i enjoyed learning about all the different aspects of German politics and history, and discussing them with reference to world issues.

---

Subject name: German Language and Culture
What did you learn in this subject? The German language

What is the teaching style? Depending on what level you take, generally there are quite a few in class and take home tasks along with mid-sems and finals. However, all are very relaxed and not so stressful.

What did you like/dislike most about this subject? The teacher and the small nature of the class. This enables you to learn more and also makes it more interactive, which is something you need for a language.

Would you recommend it to other students? Why? Definitely - even if you're not doing International Studies, it's worth learning as you'll be surprised as to how much you'll actually learn with each level and also the classes are heaps of fun. Very different to the serious nature of others subjects.
